A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel by Khaled Hosseini, published in 2007. It is set in Afghanistan and follows the lives of two women, Mariam and Laila, who are married to the same abusive man, Rasheed.


Mariam is a young woman who was born out of wedlock and faces discrimination because of it. She is forced to marry Rasheed, a much older man, and moves with him to Kabul. Laila is a young girl who grows up in a relatively privileged household, but her family is torn apart by the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. She too is eventually forced to marry Rasheed after her family is killed in a bombing.


The novel explores the themes of love, family, and the impact of war on individuals and society. It follows the lives of Mariam and Laila as they navigate the challenges and hardships of life in Afghanistan, including the oppressive regime of the Taliban. Despite the difficulties they face, the two women develop a strong bond and support each other as they navigate their tumultuous lives.
